Power down. Unplug. Dial it back.
Throughout November, we're taking the pledge to consume fewer fossil fuels.
Join us for The Reductionist Monthly Challenge!

November is beloved for lots of things. Thanksgiving. Election Day. Veteran’s Day.

Then there's NaNoWriMo, the month writers go nuts trying to churn out a novel from scratch in 30 days. And Mo-vember, the month dudes walk around with ridiculous beards and moustaches to raise awareness about men’s health issues (like prostate and testicular cancers, mental health and suicide prevention).

But, for Reductionists, November is going to be the month of reducing fossil fuel consumption.

Coal-powered electricity, natural gas-powered heat, petroleum-based gasoline and other nonrenewable-resource-based products.

Yep. We're cutting back on all of 'em!

Because once these resources are gone, they’re gone forever.

That means every string of twinkle lights we plug in to add a little more cheer to our holidays, we inch closer to the day there won’t be any coal left to power those darling illuminations anymore.

I know we’re not stopping it from happening with this act of planetary kindness. But I think it’s worth trying to slow it down.

Don’t you?

So during the month of November, we’re going to challenge ourselves to use fewer irreplaceable natural resources.

We’re powering down. We’re consuming less. And we’re buying ourselves and our children more time; time to invest in renewable resources; to innovate new methods for generating—and reusing—power.

What’s even better, we’re teaching ourselves new habits, proving we can live comfortably without using as many resources as we’re currently accustomed.

Who’s with me?!

Take the pledge below and stay tuned for actionable tips on how YOU can dial back your use of precious, irreplaceable resources for a healthier, better world.

Congrats on taking the pledge, and good luck!

It's been a harrowing week in Pittsburgh.

I honor of the victims who lost their lives at the hands of rage-filled hatred:

  • Joyce Fienberg, 75, of Oakland;
  • Richard Gottfried, 65, of Ross;
  • Rose Mallinger, 97, of Squirrel Hill;
  • Jerry Rabinowitz, 66, of Edgewood;
  • brothers Cecil Rosenthal, 59, of Squirrel Hill, and David Rosenthal, 54, of Squirrel Hill;
  • married couple Bernice Simon, 84, of Wilkinsburg; Sylvan Simon, 86, of Wilkinsburg;
  • Daniel Stein, 71, of Squirrel Hill;
  • Melvin Wax, 87, of Squirrel Hill;
  • Irving Younger, 69, of Mount Washington.

May you find eternal peace.
May your families, someday, find comfort.
May your loved ones rely on the support of our community.
May this tragic violence cease.

Hate has no place here. I stand firmly against bigotry. I do not tolerate antisemitism. I will continue to call out racism and hatred whenever I see it. I will continue to support my neighbors however I can.

Please. Join me.

Here are some places you can lend a hand:
