Learning should be fun. There are lots of ways to make it so, and some teachers are amazing at executing it.
But as a mom who was once a kid who regularly failed tests, was suspected of having a learning disability and generally got lousy grades, I know nothing creates more warm fuzzies for pursuing knowledge than creating cherished memories over family game night.
I look back on those nights growing up, my sisters in their matching red parachute pants, me with my mullet, my parents pretending to get along. It was so joyful for us all to focus on a healthy game of Monopoly or Sorry! or Trivial Pursuit as we crowded around the coffee table in our chilly basement-turned-game-room.
Ahh, the 80s.
These days my kids are getting better at enjoying board games, too, but more often than not game night ends in crying and shattered dreams. But on a recent long car trip we discovered good-old-fashioned quiz questions, just as a way to pass the time. We grownups have to make up random questions on the spot, which is challenging, but it gets the kids blooming with ideas and creativity, and no one ends up crying.
That’s one of the reasons we love playing it all the time now, especially at the dinner table and on our walks to school. The kids like to generate ‘categories,’ which is a really big word they’re proud to use as frequently as possible, and now they expect us to instantly come up with a slew of juicy quizzettes curated in an organized fashion just for them.
We do okay delivering this most of the time, but every stream runs dry eventually. For those times I can’t analog-summon good, kid-friendly trivia questions, there’s the internet.
Here’s my go-to list, in no particular order, of kid fun quizzes for when I can’t think of any good ideas. The best part? Every single one of these is free. Enjoy!
Really, Are You Serious?
Mom blogger Krystyn and I seem to be philosophically aligned, based on the fact that there’s a picture of a family eating dinner together around a table on her website. And plus she has four daughters, and I grew up in a family of four girls, so even though we’ve never met, I think we get each other. You just know sometimes. She’s created her very own list of 60 kid trivia questions—and from the looks of ‘em, she clearly gets kids. The list is even printable, which is a relief because, unfortunately, her site takes forever to load.
Have fun learning and sharing! And let me know what you and your family do to create cherish-worthy memories.
